A collection of Australia’s exclusive-use private islands
Sattelite Island, Tasmania
Best for: Unspoilt nature and uninterrupted privacy.
The essentials: Maximum of 12 guests in a three-bedroom house, separate two-bedroom boathouse and a double glamping tent. Self-catering with on-demand support from the on-site, out of sight island manager. Private chef catering is also available. Accessed by private 5 minute boat transfer from Bruny Island or a 20 minute scenic helicopter flight from Hobart.
A tiny dot in the picturesque D’Entrecasteaux Channel where the Tasmanian wilderness meets the Tasmanian way of life, Sattelite Island is a relaxed private retreat from a fast-paced world. 30 hectares of native Australian bushland, stunning sea cliffs, pebbly beaches and sunny coves are yours alone to explore.
Walk, fish, kayak, read a book and spend time reconnecting under starlit skies around an open fire. Collect eggs from the hens, enjoy oysters shucked fresh from the shoreline, herbs picked from the kitchen garden and fish from the hook straight to the BBQ.
Elysian Retreat, Long Island – Whitsundays
Best for: Pampered wellness in Whitsunday paradise
The essentials: Maximum of 20 guests in ten individual beach-front bungalows. Chef-prepared meals tailored to individual tastes, a range of water sports, yoga and pampering spa treatments. Accessed by private 30 minute helicopter or private launch transfer from Hamilton Island, Proserpine or Whitsunday Airport.
On a private cove at the southern end of Long Island, surrounded by rainforest and lapped by the turquoise waters of the Great Barrier Reef, Elysian Retreat is the place to head for to feel good about feeling great. Powered by renewable energies, serving seasonal produce from the island’s productive kitchen garden and pampering with organic Australian botanicals, this private piece of paradise provides a disconnect from the every day.
Wake up with a sunrise yoga session, walk through unspoilt bushland, float in the healing waters of the resort’s mineral pool or drift off in a hammock rocked by the gentle tropical breeze. Alternatively, cruise over the colourful corals in a glass-bottom kayak and snorkel with technicolour fish or explore further afield with the retreat’s private luxury vessel.
Haggerstone Island, Great Barrier Reef
Best for: A remote Robinson Crusoe-style Great Barrier Reef retreat for family fun or a fishing trip with the boys
The essentials: Maximum of 12 guests in a rustic three-bedroom ocean villa and handcrafted timber beach huts – each one appointed with comfortable bedding and private bathrooms. Daily adventures and dining experiences are tailored exclusively to guests’ interests and preferences. Haggerstone Island is accessed with a 2 hour private charter flight from Cairns to neighbouring Hicks Island and a 20 minute transfer by boat from there.
Approximately 600km north of Cairns off Australia’s rugged Cape York Peninsula, Haggerstone is rustic and remote, exotic and exclusive, untouched and unforgettable; equally well suited for a fishing trip with the boys or a family adventure to remember.
White sandy beaches, turquoise waters and lush green jungles are your playground. Snorkel straight off the beach or in rarely visited corners of the Great Barrier reef, fish in remote rivers and throw a line in in the open ocean. A 40ft cruiser is at your disposal and heli-touring can be arranged to whisk you away to hidden waterfalls and secluded sand cays. And at the end of the day, enjoy sunset drinks on the jetty, beach bonfires and delicious moonlit dinners.
