New Zealand’s iconic Huka Lodge has reopened this weekend (1 March 2025) following a significant refresh and rejuvenation project which saw the lodge close for almost a year whilst the works were completed.
Southern Crossings New Zealand Owner | Director, Sarah Farag and General Manager, William Coxhead were treated to a special sneak-peek pre-opening visit:
“Huka Lodge’s sophisticated new look has been so cleverly and sympathetically executed that its almost hard to remember what was there before – but stepping inside, the next level contemporary luxe is evident at every touch point and we can’t wait to share this iconic New Zealand lodge experience with travellers again” says Sarah.
Partnering again with esteemed New Zealand doyenne of interior design, Virginia Fisher (who was originally appointed by the lodge’s previous owner, Alex van Heeren in 1984), has ensured that the current works honour and celebrate the lodge’s heritage, whilst bringing a new level of contemporary comforts and style that are sure to delight today’s luxury travellers.
In true Baillie Lodges’ signature style, the new-look Huka Lodge delivers relaxed yet refined luxury with a true sense of place. Cleverly-curated interiors celebrate the lodge’s heritage and location, whilst floor to ceiling windows and an easy flow showcase the property’s spectacular setting at every opportunity.
Huka Lodge’s inspired new-look is evident from the moment guests arrive; with a new entrance and reception providing a grand and generous welcome.
The main lodge has also undergone a stunning transformation, with floor to ceiling windows framing the hero views across the gardens to the Waikato River from the new River Room guest lounge and bar; and from the light-filled Dining Room that flows to outdoor riverside terraces with welcoming lounge areas and an outdoor fireplace. The renovations also include new intimate signature dining spaces, perfect for special celebrations.
All of Huka Lodge’s 20 generously proportioned lodge suites and the property’s two ultraluxe owner’s cottages (the four-bedroom Alex van Heeren cottage and two-bedroom Alan Pye) have also been included in the rejuvenation works to reveal a refreshed, contemporary yet timeless feel.
The Huka Lodge enhancements extend outside with lush new landscaping; the tennis court now converted to also accommodate a hit of pickle ball; and the Jetty Pavilion reimagined as a riverside venue for relaxed afternoon teas and scenic sundowners.
New additions to the Huka Lodge offering also include new ‘Huka Spa Huts’ that house the gym, two spa treatment rooms, ice shower, sauna and hot pool in a tranquil, leafy setting.
The recent rejuvenation works have also seized the opportunity to enhance Huka Lodge’s sustainability initiatives with the latest in energy-efficient lighting, insulation and environmentally-friendly materials that will carry the lodge well in to the future.
What remains unchanged is Huka Lodge’s stunning natural surrounds on the banks of the Waikato River (a short stroll to Huka Falls and only minutes from Lake Taupo); access to a collection of immersive (and in many cases, exclusive) experiences: from fly-fishing and golf to hiking and heli-touring; exceptional cuisine heroing local produce and served in spectacular settings; and an unwavering dedication to expectation-exceeding service.
