Southern Ocean Lodge Kangaroo Island luxury accommodation Australia

Just 13 kilometres (8 miles) off the South Australian coast, Kangaroo Island – named by British navigator and cartographer, Matthew Flinders after the abundance of kangaroos that he encountered here – is often referred to as Australia’s “Galapagos” for its unique plant species and the wide range of ‘wildlife without fences’ experiences that the island has to offer.

SPECTACULAR NATURE & WALKS

Take in the island’s breathtaking walks rewarded with spectacular scenery at almost every turn. Gentle coastal strolls and epic island hikes showcase Kangaroo Island’s rugged wilderness, dramatic sea cliffs, secluded sandy beaches and insta-worthy natural wonders (including Admiral’s Arch and the Remarkable Rocks ancient rock formations).

AUSTRALIAN WILDLIFE ENCOUNTERS

See sea lions basking on the beach and fur seals sunning themselves on the rocks, watch ospreys soaring high above and dolphins playing in the waves, walk with wallabies and spot koalas lazing in the trees, sip sundowners with kangaroos and enjoy lunch with an echidna expert. More than one-third of the island is declared as a conservation sanctuary or national park and the island is home to an impressive collection of native Australian animals, bird- and sea-life.

DELICIOUS LOCAL DINING

Sample a feast of fresh local produce from seafoods to wine, oysters to olives, cheeses, pure ‘Ligurian’ honey and boutique gins distilled with local botanicals. From farm-gates and artisan producers to fabulous local restaurants and unique dining locations, Kangaroo Island serves up a true feast for the senses.

LUXURY ACCOMMODATION

We are thrilled to be welcoming one of Australia’s most luxurious lodges back to Kangaroo Island, with the opening of Southern Ocean Lodge 2.0. Twenty-five spectacular suites (including a collection of new ultraluxe accommodation options) crown the clifftops of Kangaroo Island’s southern shores; but Southern Ocean Lodge is so much more than just a place to rest your head. A stay at this flagship of Australian luxury lodges includes all meals, most beverages and a collection of exclusive local ‘signature experiences’. The lodge’s communal ‘Great Room’ is a stunning centrepiece from which to enjoy ever-changing views over the Southern Ocean, drink in hand. The on-site restaurant serves up Hanson Bay panoramas, delicious island produce prepared to perfection and fine South Australian wines from the impressive walk-in wine cellar. A heated infinity-edge pool and sun terrace and the decadent Southern Spa complete this most luxurious Australian lodge stay.

Kangaroo Island offers a wide range of great accommodation options including stunning Oceanview Eco Villas, exclusive-use private beachfront retreats and boutique coastal hotels.
